What to look for
- Open calls: invitations to submit scripts, extracts or proposals. Check whether the organiser wants a finished play or a project in development.
- Competitions: playwriting awards and prizes with their own entry rules, deadlines and judging processes. Read the terms before submitting.
- Workshops: chances to develop your craft. Check the experience level, format and preparation needed, or explore our playwriting workshops and classes.
- Jobs: roles in writing and theatre. Match the responsibilities, location and required experience to what you can offer.
Choose an opportunity that fits
Start by checking who can apply: an opportunity may be limited by location, age, career stage or other criteria. Check the requested length, cast size and performance format, and whether previously produced work is accepted. Look for opportunities that fit the play you want to share.
Check whether you would pay to enter or be paid for your work. Check what a prize or fee includes, any costs you would need to cover, and the terms relating to your work. If the brief leaves you unsure about something, ask the organiser before starting your application.
Before you submit a play
- Follow the listing’s source to the organiser’s current brief. Confirm that submissions are still open; an archived listing is not a current invitation.
- Check the closing date, time and time zone. For rolling submissions, confirm that the organiser is still accepting work.
- Prepare exactly what is requested: script or extract, synopsis, biography, artistic statement and any application questions. Follow word limits, file formats and anonymous submission instructions.
- Proofread the application, test any required links, and keep a copy of what you sent and the confirmation you receive.
